HOW TO KNOW IF IT’S GOD SPEAKING OR YOUR OWN THOUGHTS (5 BIBLICAL TESTS)

    INTRODUCTION

Have you ever had a thought and wondered, “Is this God speaking to me, or is it just my own mind?

“That question has confused many sincere Christians. Some have ignored God’s leading because they thought it was only their imagination. Others have mistaken their own thoughts or even deception for the voice of God.

The good news is that God has not left us in confusion. In His Word, He gives us clear biblical principles to help us test what we hear. In this teaching, we will discover five biblical tests that can help us distinguish between God’s voice and our own thoughts, so that we can walk in wisdom, confidence, and obedience.

    FIRST, UNDERSTAND THIS IMPORTANT TRUTH

Before we talk about the tests, we need to understand something many Christians misunderstand.

The Bible never teaches that every thought that enters your mind comes from God.

    Your mind can produce thoughts.

Your emotions can influence your thoughts.

Your experiences can shape your thoughts.

    Temptation can bring thoughts.

    The enemy can suggest thoughts.

And the Holy Spirit can also bring truth to your heart.

That is why Scripture repeatedly tells believers to test what they receive instead of accepting every impression as God’s voice.

The Christian life is not about believing every feeling or every idea that comes into our minds. It is about learning to recognize the voice of the Good Shepherd through His Word and His Spirit.

TEST ONE: DOES IT AGREE WITH SCRIPTURE?

This is the most important test.

God will never tell you something that contradicts what He has already revealed in the Bible.

Second Timothy chapter 3, verses 16 and 17 says:

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”

The Holy Spirit inspired the Scriptures.

Therefore, the Holy Spirit will never oppose the Scriptures.

    Suppose someone says,

“God told me to hate this person.”

    That cannot be God’s voice.

Jesus commanded us to love our enemies.

    Suppose someone says,

“God told me to be dishonest because it will help my family.”

That cannot be God’s voice.God never leads His children into sin.

This first test alone protects us from countless errors.

    Powerful truth:

God’s voice is always consistent with God’s Word.

If it contradicts Scripture, reject it immediately.

TEST TWO: DOES IT GLORIFY JESUS CHRIST?

The Holy Spirit always points people toward Christ.

Jesus said in John chapter 16, verses 13 and 14:

“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth…

He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.”

    Notice what Jesus said.

    The Holy Spirit glorifies Christ.

He does not glorify human pride.

He does not lead us to seek attention.

He does not encourage selfish ambition.

If a thought makes you exalt yourself while ignoring Christ, it is not the Holy Spirit.

    God’s voice makes Jesus greater.

Our own pride usually makes ourselves greater.

TEST THREE: WHAT KIND OF FRUIT DOES IT PRODUCE?

    Every thought leads somewhere.

    Ask yourself,

“If I obey this thought, what fruit will it produce?”

The Holy Spirit produces godly fruit.

Galatians chapter 5, verses 22 and 23 says:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”

If a thought consistently leads toward love, holiness, patience, forgiveness, humility, and obedience, it is consistent with the work of the Holy Spirit.

If it leads toward bitterness, pride, revenge, greed, hatred, or impurity, do not follow it.

Remember, not every strong feeling is the leading of the Spirit.

Sometimes our emotions are loud, while the Holy Spirit gently calls us to obey God’s truth.

TEST FOUR: DOES IT BRING CONVICTION OR CONDEMNATION?

    Many Christians struggle here.

They think every guilty feeling comes from God.

But the Bible shows an important difference.

Jesus said in John chapter 16, verse 8:

“And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.”

    The Holy Spirit convicts.

    Conviction is specific.

It points out what is wrong.

    It calls you to repentance.

It leads you back to God.

    Condemnation is different.

    It says,

    “You have failed.”

    “You are hopeless.”

    “God will never forgive you.”

Those thoughts do not reflect the gospel for those who trust in Christ.

Listen to Romans chapter 8, verse 1:

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus…”

When the Holy Spirit speaks about sin, He opens the door to repentance and restoration, not hopelessness.

TEST FIVE: HAVE YOU PRAYED, WAITED, AND SOUGHT WISE COUNSEL?

Sometimes people rush into decisions because of one strong impression.

The Bible encourages patience and wisdom.

Proverbs chapter 11, verse 14 says:

“Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.”

God often confirms His guidance over time.

    He may use:

    • Scripture

    • Prayer

    • The inward witness of the Holy Spirit

    • Mature, godly counsel

    • Circumstances under His providence

Not every thought requires immediate action.

Sometimes waiting prayerfully is an act of faith.

If a thought is from God, it does not become less true because you take time to seek Him.

    HOW TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE

    Here is a simple comparison.

    God’s voice…

    • Always agrees with Scripture.

    • Glorifies Jesus Christ.

    • Produces holiness.

    • Leads to loving obedience.

    • Brings conviction with hope.

    • Is patient and wise.

    • Draws you closer to God.

    Your own thoughts…

    • Can be influenced by fear.

    • Can be driven by personal desires.

    • Can change with your emotions.

    • May seek comfort over obedience.

    • May be inconsistent.

    • Are sometimes impulsive.

This does not mean every personal thought is wrong. We all think, plan, imagine, and reason. The key is not to assume that every thought carries God’s authority. Bring your thoughts before Scripture and prayer.

A POWERFUL TRUTH MANY CHRISTIANS MISS

Learning to recognize God’s voice is not about discovering a secret technique.

It is about growing in your relationship with Him.

Jesus said in John chapter 10, verse 27:

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”

Notice that Jesus did not say His sheep simply hear His voice.

He also said they follow Him.

    Recognition grows through relationship.

The more time you spend in God’s Word, in prayer, in worship, and in obedience, the more familiar His voice becomes.

Think of a child in a crowded room. That child can recognize a parent’s voice because of relationship, not because the parent’s voice is the loudest. In the same way, believers grow in discerning the Lord’s voice through daily fellowship with Him.

    CONCLUSION

If you want to know whether it is God speaking or your own thoughts, do not begin with your feelings.

    Begin with the Bible.

    Test every thought by Scripture.

    Ask whether it glorifies Christ.

Look at the fruit it produces.

Pay attention to whether it brings hopeful conviction or crushing condemnation.

Pray, wait on the Lord, and seek wise counsel when needed.

God is not trying to confuse His children. He delights in leading those who humbly seek Him.

As you remain rooted in His Word and sensitive to the Holy Spirit, you will grow in discernment not because you have become perfect, but because you are learning to recognize the voice of the Good Shepherd and to follow Him faithfully.

  • How to Be Spiritually Disciplined: 5 Biblical Tips That Actually Work

How to Be Spiritually Disciplined: 5 Biblical Tips That Actually Work

Have you ever wondered why some Christians remain spiritually strong and consistent, while others are always starting over?

Many believers love God, but they struggle to pray consistently, read the Bible faithfully, obey God’s voice, or resist temptation. The problem is not always a lack of desire; it is often a lack of spiritual discipline.

The good news is that spiritual discipline is not something you are born with. It is something you develop as you walk with the Holy Spirit.

Today, I want to show you five biblical keys that will help you become spiritually disciplined and grow closer to God every day.

    1. Walk by the Holy Spirit, Not by Willpower

Many people think spiritual discipline is simply trying harder.

But the Christian life was never designed to be lived by human strength.

The more you depend on yourself, the more you will become discouraged. Lasting spiritual discipline comes from yielding to the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit gives you both the desire and the power to obey God.

    Galatians 5:16 (NKJV)

“I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”

    Notice what Paul says.

He does not say, “Fight the flesh first.”

He says, “Walk in the Spirit.“

When you walk with the Holy Spirit consistently, sinful desires lose their control over you.

    Zechariah 4:6 (NKJV)

“Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ Says the LORD of hosts.”

This means your victory over laziness, inconsistency, temptation, and spiritual dryness does not come through human effort alone. It comes through daily dependence on God’s Spirit.

    Ask yourself every morning:

“Holy Spirit, help me obey You today.

“That simple prayer can change your entire day.

    2. Develop Immediate Obedience to God’s Voice

One of the greatest secrets of spiritual discipline is learning to obey God immediately.

    Delayed obedience often becomes disobedience.

Every time God speaks to your heart; whether through His Word, the Holy Spirit, or wise biblical counsel; you have a choice.

    You can obey.

    Or you can delay.

The more you delay, the easier it becomes to ignore God’s voice.

The more you obey, the easier it becomes to recognize His leading.

    James 1:22 (NKJV)

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”

Knowledge alone does not produce spiritual maturity.

    Obedience does.

    Jesus also said:

    John 14:21 (NKJV)

“He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me.”

Notice that Jesus connects love with obedience.

Spiritual discipline is not about proving your strength.

It is about expressing your love for Christ.

Every act of obedience strengthens your spiritual life.

    3. Guard Your Heart and Mind

Everything you allow into your heart is shaping your future.

    Your thoughts become actions.

    Your actions become habits.

    Your habits become your lifestyle.

That is why Scripture tells us to guard our hearts carefully.

    Proverbs 4:23 (NKJV)

“Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.”

    Ask yourself:

    • What am I watching every day?

    • What am I listening to?

    • What conversations are influencing me?

    • What occupies my thoughts when I am alone?

If your heart is constantly filled with fear, gossip, impurity, anger, or distractions, spiritual discipline becomes much harder.

Paul gives us the right pattern.

    Philippians 4:8 (NKJV)

“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report… meditate on these things.”

A disciplined Christian protects their spiritual atmosphere.

What enters your heart eventually directs your life.

    4. Be Faithful in the Secret Place

    Many people want public power.

    Few people build private intimacy.

The greatest men and women of God were first people of the secret place.

    Before David became king…

    Before Moses led Israel…

Before the apostles changed the world…

They learned to spend time alone with God.

    Jesus Himself practiced this.

    Matthew 6:6 (NKJV)

“But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place…”

Notice that Jesus did not say, “If you pray.

    “He said,

    “When you pray.”

Private fellowship with God should become a daily lifestyle.

Not because it is a religious duty.

    But because you love Him.

    Many people seek God’s hand.

Spiritually disciplined believers seek His heart.

Your private life with God will always determine your public strength.

    5. Choose Consistency Over Occasional Spiritual Excitement

Many Christians are spiritually active for one week…

Then disappear spiritually for another month.

    That is not God’s desire.

Spiritual growth is built through consistency.

Small acts of daily obedience produce lifelong transformation.

One chapter of Scripture every day is better than reading twenty chapters once a month.

Ten consistent minutes of prayer every day will often produce more fruit than praying for two hours only once in a while.

    Paul encourages believers:

    1 Corinthians 15:58 (NKJV)

“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord…”

    God blesses faithfulness.

    Not merely excitement.

    Consistency builds spiritual strength.

    Final Encouragement

    Remember this:

Spiritual discipline is not about becoming perfect.

    It is about becoming consistent.

    You may fall sometimes.

You may miss a day of prayer.

    You may struggle.

    But do not quit.

    Get back up.

Keep walking with the Holy Spirit.

    Keep obeying God’s Word.

    Keep guarding your heart.

Keep seeking God in the secret place.

    Keep choosing consistency.

Over time, you will discover that what once felt difficult becomes your lifestyle.

God is not looking for believers who shine for one day.

He is looking for disciples who remain faithful for a lifetime.

    Conclusion

If you desire to be spiritually disciplined, don’t wait for a special feeling or a perfect moment. Start today with one act of obedience. Spend time with God, listen to His voice, and follow Him faithfully.

As Jesus said in John 8:31 – 32 (NKJV):

“If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

The goal of spiritual discipline is not merely to become more disciplined; it is to know Christ more deeply, reflect His character more clearly, and walk closely with Him every day.

May the Holy Spirit strengthen you to live a life of joyful obedience, steadfast faith, and lasting spiritual growth. Amen.

  • Why Some Christians Never Experience Breakthrough ( According to the Bible)

Why Some Christians Never Experience Breakthrough ( According to the Bible)

“You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.”

    James 4:3

Many Christians pray, fast, attend church faithfully, and even serve in ministry, yet they find themselves asking the same questions year after year: Why am I not seeing breakthrough? Why does it seem like my prayers are unanswered? Why do others testify while I remain in the same place?

Breakthrough is not merely about receiving a blessing; it is about experiencing God’s intervention, power, favor, and transformation in a specific area of life. While God is loving and merciful, Scripture reveals that there are reasons why some believers never step into the breakthroughs God desires for them.

    1. They Neglect Their Relationship with God

One of the greatest misconceptions among Christians is believing that religious activity automatically produces spiritual results. Attending church, singing worship songs, and participating in ministry are important, but they cannot replace a personal relationship with God.

    Jesus said:

Abide in me, and I in you.” (John 15:4)

Breakthrough flows from intimacy with God. When believers become more focused on blessings than on the Blesser, their spiritual lives become dry and powerless. God desires sons and daughters who seek His face, not merely His hand.

A thriving relationship with God creates sensitivity to His voice, direction, and timing. Without that relationship, many people wander spiritually and miss divine opportunities.

    2. They Harbor Unforgiveness

Unforgiveness is one of the most overlooked barriers to breakthrough. Many believers pray for open doors while keeping closed hearts.

    Jesus taught:

“And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone.” (Mark 11:25)

Bitterness poisons the soul and hinders spiritual growth. When we refuse to forgive, we carry emotional burdens that affect our faith, peace, and relationship with God.

Forgiveness does not excuse wrongdoing; it simply releases the offender into God’s hands. The moment many believers let go of resentment, they experience a freedom they have not known for years.

    3. They Live in Persistent Disobedience

God’s grace is abundant, but grace should never be used as an excuse for disobedience.

Some Christians desire breakthrough while knowingly ignoring God’s instructions. Whether it is compromising morally, neglecting prayer, refusing reconciliation, or pursuing worldly desires above God’s will, disobedience creates distance between the believer and God’s purposes.

    Scripture says:

“If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land.” (Isaiah 1:19)

Obedience may not always be easy, but it positions us to walk in God’s favor and direction.

    4. They Lack Faith and Expectation

Faith is the currency of the Kingdom.

    Hebrews 11:6 declares:

“Without faith it is impossible to please God.”

Many believers pray, but deep down they have already accepted defeat. Their prayers are filled with doubt, fear, and uncertainty.

True faith does not ignore reality; it trusts God’s power above circumstances. Faith believes that God is able even when situations appear impossible.

Breakthrough often begins when a believer shifts from merely hoping God will act to confidently expecting Him to move according to His will.

    5. They Refuse Spiritual Growth

Many Christians want new blessings while remaining at old levels of maturity.

God is more interested in developing our character than simply improving our circumstances. Sometimes the delay is not because God is withholding a blessing but because He is preparing us to handle it.

    Spiritual growth requires:

    • Consistent prayer

    • Bible study

    • Humility

    • Repentance

    • Submission to God’s Word

A mature believer can sustain what God provides, while an immature believer may lose it quickly.

    6. They Depend More on Human Strength Than God

Modern culture celebrates self-reliance, but the Christian life is built upon dependence on God.

Some believers exhaust themselves trying to solve every problem through personal effort while neglecting prayer and divine guidance.

    The Bible says:

Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.” (Zechariah 4:6)

There are battles that education cannot solve, connections cannot solve, and money cannot solve. Certain breakthroughs require the intervention of the Holy Spirit.

When believers surrender their struggles to God and trust Him completely, they often witness His power in extraordinary ways.

    7. They Give Up Too Soon

One of Satan’s greatest strategies is discouragement.

Many Christians quit praying just before their breakthrough arrives. They become weary after months or years of waiting and conclude that God has forgotten them.

    Yet Scripture encourages us:

“Let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.” (Galatians 6:9)

Every great testimony has a waiting season. Every miracle has a process. Every breakthrough has a moment when perseverance is tested.

The believer who continues trusting God despite delays often experiences the greatest victories.

    Here’s an extra reason.

    8. They Ignore the Power of Prayer and Fasting

Throughout Scripture, prayer and fasting have accompanied major spiritual breakthroughs.

Jesus taught that some spiritual challenges require deeper levels of dependence on God. Fasting humbles the flesh and sharpens spiritual sensitivity.

When combined with sincere prayer, fasting can bring clarity, renewed strength, and spiritual victory.

While fasting is not a method for manipulating God, it is a powerful discipline that positions believers to hear Him more clearly and align with His will.

    The Path to Breakthrough

If you feel stuck today, do not lose hope. God’s power has not diminished, and His promises remain true.

Take time to examine your heart. Ask God to reveal anything that may be hindering your growth. Strengthen your relationship with Him, walk in obedience, forgive those who have hurt you, and continue believing even when results are not immediately visible.

Breakthrough is not always instant, but God is always working behind the scenes on behalf of those who trust Him.

    Remember this truth:

God’s delays are not God’s denials. The same God who opened the Red Sea, raised the dead, and transformed lives throughout Scripture is still at work today.

Keep praying. Keep believing. Keep obeying. Your breakthrough may be closer than you think.

    Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your faithfulness and mercy. Search my heart and reveal anything that may be hindering my spiritual growth. Help me walk in obedience, faith, forgiveness, and complete dependence upon You. Strengthen me to persevere and trust Your timing. I believe that You are able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that I ask or think. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
