    1. THE HOLY SPIRIT SPEAKS THROUGH THE WORD OF GOD

This is the primary way the Holy Spirit speaks.

Many believers are waiting for a new word while neglecting the Word God has already given.

Every time you read the Scriptures with a humble heart, the Holy Spirit can illuminate them.

A verse you have read many times may suddenly become clear.

    It may answer a prayer.

    Correct your thinking.

    Give direction.

    Bring comfort.

    Or strengthen your faith.

That is the Holy Spirit making God’s Word alive in your heart.

Jesus said in John chapter 14, verse 26:

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Notice that Jesus did not say the Holy Spirit would invent a new message.

He reminds believers of Christ’s words.

One of the greatest signs of spiritual maturity is not receiving countless “new revelations.”

It is understanding and obeying the Scriptures.

    Powerful Truth:

If you want to hear God more clearly…

Spend more time in your Bible.

Many prayers asking God to speak are answered the moment you open His Word.

    2. THE HOLY SPIRIT SPEAKS THROUGH AN INNER WITNESS

Sometimes the Holy Spirit speaks quietly within your spirit.

    Not through an audible voice…

But through a deep inward assurance.

The Bible calls this the witness of the Spirit.

Romans chapter 8, verse 16 says:

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.

    Notice…

The Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirit.

This inner witness is not usually loud.

    It is gentle.

    Peaceful.

    Steady.

It often confirms God’s truth rather than introducing something completely new.

    For example…

You may pray about serving in a particular ministry.

As you continue praying and studying Scripture, a deep peace grows within you.

That quiet confidence is often how the Holy Spirit bears witness.

    Important Warning

Do not confuse emotions with the witness of the Holy Spirit.

    Excitement comes and goes.

    Fear comes and goes.

God’s inward witness remains steady because it is rooted in truth.

    3. THE HOLY SPIRIT SPEAKS THROUGH CONVICTION

One of the greatest acts of God’s love is conviction.

Many people think conviction is punishment.

    It is not.

Conviction is the Holy Spirit lovingly showing us where we need to change. This conviction is to the world.

Jesus said in John chapter 16, verse 8:

And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.

When the Holy Spirit convicts you…

He is not trying to shame you.

He is trying to restore you.

    Imagine speaking harshly to someone.

    Later that day…

    Your heart becomes uneasy.

    You cannot ignore it.

    You know you must apologize.

That gentle conviction is often the Holy Spirit calling you back to obedience.

    4. THE HOLY SPIRIT SPEAKS THROUGH GODLY WISDOM

Sometimes people expect God’s voice to be mysterious.

Yet often the Holy Spirit simply gives wisdom.

James wrote in James chapter 1, verse 5:

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

    Notice…

God does not promise to answer every question with a supernatural sign.

    Sometimes He gives wisdom instead.

Wisdom helps you apply God’s Word correctly.

It helps you make decisions that honour Christ.

The Holy Spirit often guides us by helping us think biblically rather than impulsively.

    Powerful Truth:

One of the highest forms of hearing God…

    Is receiving His wisdom.

Many believers overlook this because they expect something dramatic.

Yet throughout Proverbs, wisdom is presented as one of God’s greatest gifts.

    5. THE HOLY SPIRIT SPEAKS THROUGH GODLY COUNSEL

God never intended believers to live in isolation.

Sometimes the Holy Spirit confirms His direction through mature Christians.

Proverbs chapter 11, verse 14 says:

Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.

    Notice…

The verse does not say everyone who gives advice speaks for God.

It speaks about wise and godly counsel.

A mature believer will not replace Scripture.

They will help you understand and apply it.

Many serious mistakes could have been avoided if people had humbly sought biblical counsel before acting.

    Powerful Truth:

    Pride often says,

    “I don’t need advice.”

    Wisdom says,

“God can use faithful believers to help me see what I may be missing.”

    6. THE HOLY SPIRIT SPEAKS THROUGH THE PEACE OF GOD

One of the ways the Holy Spirit confirms God’s will is through His peace.

This does not mean that following God will always feel easy.

Many people in the Bible obeyed God while facing danger, persecution, and hardship. Yet, even in those difficult moments, God gave them an inward peace that strengthened them to continue.

Paul wrote in Colossians chapter 3, verse 15:

And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.

The word “rule” means to act like an umpire, to guide or decide.

When your life is surrendered to God and your decision agrees with Scripture, the Holy Spirit often gives a quiet confidence and peace that guards your heart.

    However, remember this important truth:

    Peace never replaces Scripture.

Someone may say, “I have peace about leaving my spouse.”

If that decision contradicts God’s Word, it is not the peace of the Holy Spirit.

God’s peace always agrees with God’s truth.

    Powerful Truth:

The peace of God is not permission to ignore the Bible.

It is confirmation while walking in obedience to the Bible.

    7. THE HOLY SPIRIT SPEAKS THROUGH OPEN AND CLOSED DOORS

Sometimes God speaks through His providence.

He opens doors that no one can shut.

He also closes doors that would take us away from His purpose.

    Look at the Apostle Paul.

Acts chapter 16, verses 6 and 7 says:

Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia,

After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not.

Paul wanted to go to certain places.

    The Holy Spirit said no.

Later, God directed him to Macedonia, where many people came to Christ.

Sometimes we become disappointed when a door closes.

Years later we discover God was protecting us or preparing us for something better.

    Important Warning:

Not every open door is from God.

Jonah found a ship going exactly where he wanted.

    The door was open.

But it was the wrong direction.

Open doors must always be tested by Scripture and prayer.

    8. THE HOLY SPIRIT SPEAKS THROUGH DREAMS AND VISIONS

This is one of the most misunderstood subjects in Christianity.

The Bible clearly shows that God has spoken through dreams and visions.

Acts chapter 2, verse 17 says:

And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.

    Throughout Scripture:

Joseph received dreams. Daniel interpreted dreams.

Peter received a vision. Paul saw visions. These experiences were real.

    However…

The Bible never teaches believers to chase dreams and visions.

Instead, we are told to seek God Himself.

Dreams and visions are exceptional, not the normal foundation of the Christian life.

Even when God gives one, it must be tested by Scripture.

If a dream contradicts the Bible, it is not from God.

    Powerful Truth:

Do not build your faith on dreams. Build your faith on Christ and His Word.

    9. THE HOLY SPIRIT SPEAKS THROUGH SPIRITUAL GIFTS

The Holy Spirit gives spiritual gifts to build up the Church.

Sometimes He speaks through gifts such as prophecy, words of wisdom, words of knowledge, and discernment.

Paul wrote in First Corinthians chapter 12, verses 7 and 8:

But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit.

    Notice the purpose.

The gifts are given to benefit others, not to make someone appear more spiritual.

    Every genuine spiritual gift will:

Honour Jesus Christ. Agree with Scripture.

Build up the Church. Lead people closer to God.

If a supposed prophecy encourages sin or contradicts the Bible, it must be rejected.

The Holy Spirit never speaks against Himself.

    10. THE HOLY SPIRIT SPEAKS THROUGH GOD’S PROVIDENCESomet

Sometimes you will not hear a voice.

You will simply watch God arrange circumstances.

Romans chapter 8, verse 28 says:

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

    Notice…

The verse does not say all things are good.

It says God works through all things for the good of those who love Him.

Looking back over your life, you may realise:

    A delayed answer protected you.

    A disappointment redirected you.

    A closed opportunity prepared you.

A difficult season strengthened your faith.

God was speaking through His sovereign guidance all along.

Many times, we understand God’s direction more clearly in hindsight than in the moment.

    Thank you,

    God bless you.

  • HOW TO KNOW IF IT’S GOD SPEAKING OR YOUR OWN THOUGHTS (5 BIBLICAL TESTS)

HOW TO KNOW IF IT’S GOD SPEAKING OR YOUR OWN THOUGHTS (5 BIBLICAL TESTS)

    INTRODUCTION

Have you ever had a thought and wondered, “Is this God speaking to me, or is it just my own mind?

“That question has confused many sincere Christians. Some have ignored God’s leading because they thought it was only their imagination. Others have mistaken their own thoughts or even deception for the voice of God.

The good news is that God has not left us in confusion. In His Word, He gives us clear biblical principles to help us test what we hear. In this teaching, we will discover five biblical tests that can help us distinguish between God’s voice and our own thoughts, so that we can walk in wisdom, confidence, and obedience.

    FIRST, UNDERSTAND THIS IMPORTANT TRUTH

Before we talk about the tests, we need to understand something many Christians misunderstand.

The Bible never teaches that every thought that enters your mind comes from God.

    Your mind can produce thoughts.

Your emotions can influence your thoughts.

Your experiences can shape your thoughts.

    Temptation can bring thoughts.

    The enemy can suggest thoughts.

And the Holy Spirit can also bring truth to your heart.

That is why Scripture repeatedly tells believers to test what they receive instead of accepting every impression as God’s voice.

The Christian life is not about believing every feeling or every idea that comes into our minds. It is about learning to recognize the voice of the Good Shepherd through His Word and His Spirit.

TEST ONE: DOES IT AGREE WITH SCRIPTURE?

This is the most important test.

God will never tell you something that contradicts what He has already revealed in the Bible.

Second Timothy chapter 3, verses 16 and 17 says:

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”

The Holy Spirit inspired the Scriptures.

Therefore, the Holy Spirit will never oppose the Scriptures.

    Suppose someone says,

“God told me to hate this person.”

    That cannot be God’s voice.

Jesus commanded us to love our enemies.

    Suppose someone says,

“God told me to be dishonest because it will help my family.”

That cannot be God’s voice.God never leads His children into sin.

This first test alone protects us from countless errors.

    Powerful truth:

God’s voice is always consistent with God’s Word.

If it contradicts Scripture, reject it immediately.

TEST TWO: DOES IT GLORIFY JESUS CHRIST?

The Holy Spirit always points people toward Christ.

Jesus said in John chapter 16, verses 13 and 14:

“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth…

He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.”

    Notice what Jesus said.

    The Holy Spirit glorifies Christ.

He does not glorify human pride.

He does not lead us to seek attention.

He does not encourage selfish ambition.

If a thought makes you exalt yourself while ignoring Christ, it is not the Holy Spirit.

    God’s voice makes Jesus greater.

Our own pride usually makes ourselves greater.

TEST THREE: WHAT KIND OF FRUIT DOES IT PRODUCE?

    Every thought leads somewhere.

    Ask yourself,

“If I obey this thought, what fruit will it produce?”

The Holy Spirit produces godly fruit.

Galatians chapter 5, verses 22 and 23 says:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”

If a thought consistently leads toward love, holiness, patience, forgiveness, humility, and obedience, it is consistent with the work of the Holy Spirit.

If it leads toward bitterness, pride, revenge, greed, hatred, or impurity, do not follow it.

Remember, not every strong feeling is the leading of the Spirit.

Sometimes our emotions are loud, while the Holy Spirit gently calls us to obey God’s truth.

TEST FOUR: DOES IT BRING CONVICTION OR CONDEMNATION?

    Many Christians struggle here.

They think every guilty feeling comes from God.

But the Bible shows an important difference.

Jesus said in John chapter 16, verse 8:

“And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.”

    The Holy Spirit convicts.

    Conviction is specific.

It points out what is wrong.

    It calls you to repentance.

It leads you back to God.

    Condemnation is different.

    It says,

    “You have failed.”

    “You are hopeless.”

    “God will never forgive you.”

Those thoughts do not reflect the gospel for those who trust in Christ.

Listen to Romans chapter 8, verse 1:

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus…”

When the Holy Spirit speaks about sin, He opens the door to repentance and restoration, not hopelessness.

TEST FIVE: HAVE YOU PRAYED, WAITED, AND SOUGHT WISE COUNSEL?

Sometimes people rush into decisions because of one strong impression.

The Bible encourages patience and wisdom.

Proverbs chapter 11, verse 14 says:

“Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.”

God often confirms His guidance over time.

    He may use:

    • Scripture

    • Prayer

    • The inward witness of the Holy Spirit

    • Mature, godly counsel

    • Circumstances under His providence

Not every thought requires immediate action.

Sometimes waiting prayerfully is an act of faith.

If a thought is from God, it does not become less true because you take time to seek Him.

    HOW TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE

    Here is a simple comparison.

    God’s voice…

    • Always agrees with Scripture.

    • Glorifies Jesus Christ.

    • Produces holiness.

    • Leads to loving obedience.

    • Brings conviction with hope.

    • Is patient and wise.

    • Draws you closer to God.

    Your own thoughts…

    • Can be influenced by fear.

    • Can be driven by personal desires.

    • Can change with your emotions.

    • May seek comfort over obedience.

    • May be inconsistent.

    • Are sometimes impulsive.

This does not mean every personal thought is wrong. We all think, plan, imagine, and reason. The key is not to assume that every thought carries God’s authority. Bring your thoughts before Scripture and prayer.

A POWERFUL TRUTH MANY CHRISTIANS MISS

Learning to recognize God’s voice is not about discovering a secret technique.

It is about growing in your relationship with Him.

Jesus said in John chapter 10, verse 27:

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”

Notice that Jesus did not say His sheep simply hear His voice.

He also said they follow Him.

    Recognition grows through relationship.

The more time you spend in God’s Word, in prayer, in worship, and in obedience, the more familiar His voice becomes.

Think of a child in a crowded room. That child can recognize a parent’s voice because of relationship, not because the parent’s voice is the loudest. In the same way, believers grow in discerning the Lord’s voice through daily fellowship with Him.

    CONCLUSION

If you want to know whether it is God speaking or your own thoughts, do not begin with your feelings.

    Begin with the Bible.

    Test every thought by Scripture.

    Ask whether it glorifies Christ.

Look at the fruit it produces.

Pay attention to whether it brings hopeful conviction or crushing condemnation.

Pray, wait on the Lord, and seek wise counsel when needed.

God is not trying to confuse His children. He delights in leading those who humbly seek Him.

As you remain rooted in His Word and sensitive to the Holy Spirit, you will grow in discernment not because you have become perfect, but because you are learning to recognize the voice of the Good Shepherd and to follow Him faithfully.
